Metoprolol is a predominantly beta-1 selective adrenergic receptor blocker that reduces sympathetic stimulation of the heart, helping lower heart rate, cardiac workload and blood pressure. Metoprolol Succinate Extended-Release is commonly used for the management of hypertension and angina, and it has an established role in the treatment of chronic heart failure in appropriately selected patients. The extended-release formulation is designed to provide prolonged delivery of the medicine over the dosing interval. Treatment should be individualized and medically supervised. Blood pressure and heart rate should be monitored, particularly during initiation or dose adjustment. Metoprolol should generally not be stopped abruptly, as sudden withdrawal can worsen angina or other cardiovascular symptoms in susceptible patients.
